Residents Express Frustration, Anger Over Proposed Development
A packed May 2025 council meeting heard opposition to annexing about 150 acres near Hwy 221 for a subdivision. Council approved the annexation and residential zoning.
The May 2025 City Council meeting drew a rare, packed house. Residents spoke against annexing nearly 150 acres near Highway 221, Old Spartanburg Road and Chestnut Road for a proposed subdivision. Speakers raised concerns about safety and road capacity, and said the annexation process should do more to notify the public. Because the comments came during a public hearing, council and staff could not respond to them at the meeting. Council then approved the annexation and single-family zoning. Assistant City Manager Brandon McMahan said SCDOT would run a traffic study to set any required road upgrades before development.
In other business, council approved annexing 23 acres at Hwy 101 and Old Orchard Road for industrial use and rezoned 601 E. Georgia so it can stay a dentist's office. It passed first reading of a roughly $7 million budget and took first steps to annex about 360 acres on Godfrey Town Road and Phillips Lane for a planned mixed-use development. Council also joined a joint industrial business park with other Spartanburg and Cherokee county municipalities and adopted a police policy for pregnant employees.
