Resident Asks Council to Bring Back Parks & Rec Tourism Committee

At its December 2024 meeting a resident asked Woodruff City Council to revive a Parks & Recreation Tourism Committee; the council also approved sewer funding, a rezoning and police policy updates.

The Woodruff Times reported on January 13, 2025 on the Woodruff City Council's December 2024 meeting. Here is our summary.

Committee request: Resident Liz Marcellino Morgan asked the council to bring back the Parks & Recreation Tourism Committee, describing the earlier group as volunteers committed to improving the city. She said its return would give residents a voice in planning future recreation facilities and activities, and suggested advance notice of plans through several channels and a committee that represents different groups and neighborhoods. She framed it as collaboration, not criticism. Because she spoke during public comment, the council held no discussion and took no action.

Other actions: The council approved the second reading of revisions to the Comprehensive Plan, which state law requires be reviewed within five years. It accepted $1.5 million in loan assistance from the SC Water Quality Revolving Fund Authority for a new sewer pump station (most of the $1.8 million project is covered by principal forgiveness). It approved the second reading of a rezoning of 58 acres at 6228 Highway 101 from Planned Development to Industrial, and a resolution updating police policies on use of force, firearms and personnel selection as required by the state.

2024 recap: City Manager Lee Bailey cited the sewer expansion for the new high school, the wastewater plant expansion and new businesses, with more than $188 million in investment and over 500 building permits in 2024. For 2025 he expects downtown projects, the BMW battery plant opening, the new high school opening and more industrial jobs.

The council meets the last Tuesday of each month at City Hall, and meetings are open to the public. The source does not say whether the committee request was placed on a later agenda.
