Council Welcomes Jeff Wood, Approves Ballfield Sale for Senior Housing and Trims Impact Fees

Council swore in Jeff Wood as Ward 6 councilman after an uncontested special election, then unanimously approved the sale and rezoning of the former Mills Mill ballfield for 32 senior rentals in exchange for a Chamberlain Street gym site, and lowered residential impact fees from $4,540 to $4,070.

The Woodruff Times reported on September 27, 2022 on City Council's latest meeting.

Jeff Wood was sworn in as the new Ward 6 councilman, replacing Scott Dickard, with the oath administered by Judge Vickie Rae Smith. Wood won an uncontested special election.

Council unanimously approved the sale and rezoning of about three acres at 220 Mill Street, the former Mills Mill ballfield. The city will exchange that parcel for one on Chamberlain Street that holds an old gymnasium. The ballfield property is planned for affordable senior housing, 32 rental units for residents 55 and older. City Manager Lee Bailey said, in the outlet's words, that the city gains a senior living facility and a future indoor recreation facility.

Council also restructured development impact fees. The residential fee dropped from $4,540 to $4,070, and the industrial fee from $537 to $225 per 1,000 square feet, while commercial fees were unchanged. The money supports a planned athletic complex and a future police department expansion.

The city also announced holiday carriage rides downtown on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.
