Why Woodruff Is Back in Class 2A for 2026-28

The Woodruff Times explains the SCHSL's 2026-28 realignment: a league restructuring moved Woodruff High down from 3A to 2A, where it projects as the third-largest school.

On December 24, 2025, The Woodruff Times reported on the South Carolina High School League's two-year realignment for 2026-2028, which moves Woodruff High School's teams into Class 2A. Here is our summary.

Why the move: Schools are placed by 145-day enrollment, not counting outgoing seniors. The Times reports that the league wanted more schools in 1A, so it shifted the bottom 15 schools in the old 2A down to 1A. That had a trickle-down effect, and several longtime 3A schools, Woodruff among them, dropped to 2A. By the numbers, Woodruff projects as the third-largest school in the new 2A.

Familiar opponents: The Times says the new 2A brings back traditional rivals and possible playoff matchups with schools such as Central (Pageland), Newberry, Saluda, Strom Thurmond, Mid-Carolina and Dillon. Region assignments were due out in January. The paper expected Woodruff could land with schools such as Mountain View Prep, Chesnee, Landrum, Blacksburg and High Point Academy.

The school's view: Athletic director Michael Morris told the Times the 2A placement was a surprise, since he had expected Woodruff to be one of the smallest 3A schools. He said the school still looks forward to playing Chapman, Broome and Union County, which stayed in 3A. The paper also notes that enrollment growth in the district is mostly in the primary and elementary grades, so high school numbers are expected to rise in the coming years.

This is a summary in our own words. Read the full story at The Woodruff Times.
