Council Annexes 88-Acre Former Junkyard on East Georgia Road, Zones It for Future Homes

Council approved annexing more than 88 acres on East Georgia Road, the former junkyard site, and zoning it R-2 single family at the owners' request. City Manager Lee Bailey said there is no current development plan; the owners sought it for a possible future sale or development.

The Woodruff Times reported on September 3, 2024 that City Council approved the annexation of more than 88 acres on East Georgia Road that was once the site of a junkyard.

City Manager Lee Bailey said the family that owns the land asked for annexation with a possible future sale or development in mind, which improves the property's potential value. Council also approved the owners' request to zone it R-2 single family. Bailey said there is no current plan to develop it.

Council gave second-reading approval to annex a 10-foot strip along the 2.5 acres at 661 Cavins Road. The strip has no tax or zoning effect on that property; it connects a parcel beyond it so that parcel touches the city limits and can be annexed.

Council also heard from United Way of the Piedmont about a community health needs assessment it is running across Spartanburg County, aimed at understanding residents' health and wellness needs and improving health outcomes in the Upstate.
