Nov 2020: Council Advances $1 Sale for Six Townhomes and Rezoning for About 430 Homes on McElrath Road

At its Nov. 24, 2020 meeting, council gave first-reading approval to selling a small city lot near City Hall for six townhomes, new Main Street zoning limits, and rezoning 129 acres for about 430 homes, while a 24-acre Fountain Inn Rd rezoning failed.

The Woodruff Times reported on November 25, 2020 on the Woodruff City Council's November 24 meeting, which was dominated by housing and zoning items.

Council gave first-reading approval to selling a small city-owned parcel at Hayne and Pearson streets, across from City Hall and east of the public library, to a developer planning six townhomes. The sale price was $1.

Council also approved on first reading two changes to the zoning ordinance: a ban on first-floor dwelling units in Main Street buildings within the revitalization district, and removal of setback requirements for buildings 45 feet tall or shorter.

On first reading, council approved annexing and rezoning three lots on Hunter Road and rezoning 129 acres off McElrath Road and Highway 101 for roughly 430 residential units, with a clubhouse, park and sports courts.

A request to rezone nearly 24 acres at Fountain Inn Road and Highway 101 died for lack of a second motion. Council member Toni Sloan voiced concern about keeping land available for commercial and industrial use.

The next meeting was set for December 22, 2020 at 5:30 p.m.
