Woodruff High School Awarded Air Force JROTC Program
After years of denials, the Air Force approved a JROTC program at Woodruff High, starting in the 2027–28 school year. The board also heard of an ~$80,000 Title I cut.
At the September meeting of the Spartanburg County School District Four Board of Trustees, Principal Christine Morris announced that the Air Force has approved a JROTC program for Woodruff High School, beginning in the 2027–28 school year. The school had been turned down for years under a federal rule limiting the number of programs in one area. When that limit was lifted, the school reapplied and was approved after a spring visit. Superintendent Dr. Aaron Fulmer began pursuing the program while he was the high school's principal.
Cadets study leadership, life skills and academics. They are not required to join the military, but can earn advanced rank if they enlist or scholarships through college ROTC.
Assistant Superintendent Chris Benfield reported that the district's federal Title I allotment was cut by almost $80,000. Those funds mostly pay for extra primary and elementary teachers to keep class sizes down, so the district budget will cover the shortfall. The board also heard first readings of state-recommended policies, including several on artificial intelligence.
The school board meets at 6 p.m. on the first Monday of each month at Woodruff High School. Meetings are open to the public.
