From Woodruff High to the Cincinnati Reds: Marcus McBeth Now Helps Young Athletes Get Recruited
Marcus McBeth, a 1998 Woodruff High graduate who grew up in Cross Anchor, pitched in the majors for the Cincinnati Reds. The Woodruff Times caught up with him about his path and Pordl Recruiting, the company he founded to guide athletes and families.
The Woodruff Times published a profile on June 8, 2026 of Marcus McBeth, a former Cross Anchor resident and 1998 graduate of Woodruff High School.
The path: McBeth went from Woodruff High to baseball at the University of South Carolina and then to Major League Baseball as a pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds. He told the paper his best Woodruff memories are of time with teammates on and off the field, more than any single win.
After playing: Relationships from his career led him into professional scouting and recruiting. He now owns and founded Pordl Recruiting, which gives athletes and families honest evaluations of where they stand academically and athletically and supports them through the recruiting process.
His message to small-town athletes: He rejects the idea that players from towns like Woodruff are overlooked, saying coaches will come if they know where players are and those players perform. He stresses respect for the game, coaches, umpires and parents, confidence, and above all discipline and faith.
Hometown: McBeth credited his parents' sacrifices and thanked the Woodruff community for its support, saying he will always be proud to call Woodruff home.
