Area Council Hears Athletic Complex Update as Downtown Traffic Concerns Are Raised
The Godfrey Town Road athletic complex is set to open in summer 2027, the city told the Woodruff Area Council, which also heard concerns about traffic and parking on Main Street.
The Woodruff Times reported on May 23, 2026 on the Woodruff Area Council's first meeting of the year, held Tuesday, May 19 at City Hall with local business owners, OneSpartanburg, Inc. and city staff. Here is our summary.
Athletic complex: Assistant City Manager and Planning Director Brandon McMahan said the complex under construction on Godfrey Town Road will have new lighting and turf, tiered fields and a kayak access point on the Enoree River. It is meant to bring visitors and business to town and is scheduled to open in summer 2027.
Leadership: Hunter Brown and Leslie Cash, who have led the Area Council for five years, are stepping out of those roles. No replacements were discussed.
Downtown traffic: asked how event visitors could be steered downtown, McMahan pointed to Edwards Mill Road or Highway 101 to Main Street. Concerns were raised about pedestrian safety and parking on Main Street. On narrowing downtown to two lanes, McMahan said SCDOT had found it would back traffic up from North Main Street. SCDOT data the paper checked afterward shows about 22,100 vehicles a day on North Main just before downtown.
