Walnut Grove Restoration Wins a 2026 State Preservation Award

The Spartanburg County Foundation received the Stewardship Award at the 2026 South Carolina Historic Preservation Awards for restoring the Walnut Grove Manor House in Roebuck.

Spartan Weekly News reported on August 12, 2026 that the Spartanburg County Foundation won the Stewardship Award in the 2026 South Carolina Historic Preservation Awards. The award recognizes the Foundation's restoration of the Walnut Grove Manor House near Roebuck. Foundation President and CEO Troy Hanna accepted it at the State House.

The paper says Moore family descendants gave the property to the Foundation in 1961. The house reopened to the public on October 4, 2025, after a $1.5 million restoration. The Spartanburg County Historical Association, which is based at the site, runs its tours, programs and events.

The Foundation has also set up a Walnut Grove Maintenance Endowment Fund to pay for upkeep going forward. Details are in the Spartan Weekly article.
