BMW Group Breaks Ground on New High-Voltage Battery Assembly Factory in South Carolina
BMW broke ground on "Plant Woodruff," a $700 million battery assembly plant on 315 acres near the city, with more than 300 jobs planned.
In a June 2023 press release, BMW Group announced it had broken ground on a new high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, named "Plant Woodruff." The plant is meant to build sixth-generation batteries for fully electric BMW X models assembled at Plant Spartanburg.
According to BMW, the facility sits on 315 acres near the city, will be more than one million square feet, and includes a technology building plus support buildings such as a cafeteria, fire department and energy center. The company said more than 300 jobs would be created on site. It is part of a $1.7 billion U.S. investment BMW announced in 2022, $700 million of it for the Woodruff plant.
BMW said battery cells would come from partner AESC's new plant in Florence, SC, and described sustainability plans for the site, including running without fossil fuels on 100 percent green electricity and harvesting rainwater. The release includes remarks from BMW executives, Gov. Henry McMaster and SC Commerce Secretary Harry Lightsey.
