WRWD Breaks Ground on 120-Million-Gallon Storage Basin

The Woodruff-Roebuck Water District broke ground on a raw-water storage basin that officials say will hold about 30 days of demand. Completion is expected in December 2026.

The Woodruff Times reports that the Woodruff-Roebuck Water District (WRWD) broke ground in September 2025 on a 120-million-gallon raw-water storage basin on the District's 300-acre property.

According to the District, the basin will hold enough water for about 30 days of demand at current usage. General Manager Kermit Johnson said it will strengthen drought resilience, improve water quality and give the District more flexibility, and compared its size to nearly 182 Olympic swimming pools. The project is backed by $10 million from the South Carolina Infrastructure Investment Program, administered by the state's Rural Infrastructure Authority.

Officials told the paper the timing mattered because existing permits, which took years to secure, were set to expire and future approvals could be harder. Construction was expected to finish in December 2026.

WRWD was founded in 1956. It runs its own treatment plant (opened 2013, expanded 2021) and raw-water intakes, and provides drinking water and fire protection to Woodruff, Roebuck and the rest of southern Spartanburg County. The full story is at The Woodruff Times.
