Walnut Grove Manor House Reopens After $1.5M Restoration

The 18th-century manor house at Walnut Grove in Roebuck is open for tours again after a $1.5 million structural restoration, and visitors can now see the upstairs too.

The Post and Courier reported on September 29, 2025 that the restoration of the Walnut Grove Manor House was complete. The house is on Otts Shoals Road in Roebuck, a short drive from Woodruff. Structural problems had stopped tours inside the house in 2017.

According to the paper, the Spartanburg County Foundation, which owns the property, and the Spartanburg County Historical Association, which runs the site, had the foundation, walls and ceilings repaired. They followed state Historic Preservation Office guidelines. The front porch was rebuilt using a 1904 photograph as the guide. Displays in the house show what the work involved, and the second floor, closed for years, is open again.

Interior tours resumed at Festifall on October 4-5, 2025. The paper also notes that unmarked graves in the site's cemetery are believed to belong to formerly enslaved people who worked the plantation.
