Block 224 is a small public space the City of Woodruff built on South Main Street to bring more people downtown. The city bought the empty building at 224 S. Main in 2018, after the owner found it too costly to bring up to code, and turned the lot into an open-air plaza.
It was designed with seating areas, a gas firepit, an arched entry facade and a stage. According to The Woodruff Times, construction cost about $350,000, helped by a $25,000 Hometown Economic Development Grant from the Municipal Association of South Carolina.
Experience Spartanburg, the county's tourism office, describes it as Woodruff's outdoor performance space, opened in 2021, with live performances typically on Thursdays and weekends from April through October. Programming changes from season to season, so check the city's events before you plan around a show. It sits a short walk from the shops and restaurants on Main Street.
