Croft State Park sits on land the U.S. Army used during World War II as Camp Croft, a basic training center that also held German prisoners of war late in the war. After the base closed in 1945, the state bought about 7,000 acres of it, and the park opened in 1949. Before the Army arrived, the land was farmland, and old homesites and family cemeteries are still found along the trails.
Today it is one of the largest parks in the South Carolina state park system. Lake Craig is open for fishing and paddling. The park has more than 20 miles of biking trails, more than 20 miles of equestrian trails with a show ring, hiking-only trails, a playground, picnic shelters and 50 campsites.
Hours change between standard and daylight saving time, and parts of the trail system sometimes close, so check the park's page before you go.
